Saifee expedition, October 1999

Bridge over troubled waters

The journey from Uttarkashi (where we hired all the equipment) to Gangotri (where we used all the equipment) was magnificent, to say the least. It was the first time in the Himalayas for most of us and we were all dazzled by the clear Bhagirathi river, the meandering narrow road over which we prayed like one, and the beautiful shaky bridges. We had been told to expect a  clear weather. However, the misty mountains, the overcast sky and the gentle drizzle was not exactly the thing worth writing home about. Glucose biscuits dipped in hot tea make an excellent pep-up medicine for such bleak instances.
